How to Start a Bakery
Do you love to bake? Does everyone tell you that your brownies, cakes, or pies are the best in the world? Capitalize on your talents, and start a bakery. A bakery can be one of the best businesses to start in any time or economy, because everyone wants comfort food! Make money, have fun, and eat, or reap, the rewards!
Buying into a Franchise
One way to start a bakery is to buy into a franchise. When you start a franchise you don’t have to worry about advertising, recipes, or anything else, because it is all done for you. Basically, it’s like a cut out business, all you do is run it. This can be an advantage if you don’t know much about business. However, when you own a franchise you won’t have much say in the products you sell, and you won’t be able to use your own recipes.
Buying an Existing Bakery
If someone is retiring or simply going out of business you can buy their existing bakery. This is also an advantage, because you inherit the customers and reputation that go with the bakery’s name. Unlike a franchise, you can use your own recipes. You may also be able to negotiate for use of the bakery’s signature recipes so that you can create a more seamless changeover. The downside to this method of starting a bakery is that you have to have quite a bit more in start up costs.
Starting your own Bakery
Starting your own bakery is the cheapest way to go. You could even start out in your home kitchen, baking up a storm and selling over the phone or through the internet. Many bakers get started by gaining contracts for cookies, brownies, or cakes to be sold in local convenience stores or grocers. This way people become familiar with your name and your product while you make enough money to remain operational.
After a few months you should be able to start building a good clientele. If you don’t want to spend the money on leasing or buying a building or storefront right away you can save up your profits over about a year to be able to do this
Generally speaking, starting your own business is the best way to go. However, there are many advantages to the other methods of starting a bakery. You simply need to evaluate your own skills, talents and resources to determine the best method for you.
