How to Sing High Notes
Just like every other muscle, your vocal chords can be stretched to reach greater limits that you naturally can. Perhaps you have a naturally lower voice but are looking to be able to hit the high notes that many popular music artists can. Some of those singers are born with the natural talent to reach the high notes but some required training and stretching to get there. With consistent practice, hard work, and dedication, you can learn how to sing high notes as well.
Here are some ideas and suggestions to get you started. However, please remember that it is wise to consult a voice coach if you have one before you try these exercises and while you are performing them. Music and voice professionals can give you excellent help and aid you in your training with clear explanations and trustworthy feedback.
Before you get started in any voice training exercises, you need to warm up your voice. Because your vocal chords are muscles like any other in your body, it is wise to properly warm them up so they are relaxed and limber for singing. You can warm your vocal chords up by singing scales or some favorite songs. Try to warm up your low, middle, and high ranges.
When singing, remember to sing from your diaphragm and not your throat. You need to breathe deeply and correctly if you are going to hit the high notes. Try standing up while you sing, breathing from your gut. (And keep in mind that it’s never good to sing right after drinking or eating much.)
Now for the actual practice of singing higher notes. Start at your middle range where you are most comfortable and practice singing higher and higher. This might include simply singing scales or it might be raising your favorite song up slowly half step by half step. Don’t strain your voice or overdo it.
Try to picture mentally reaching up to that higher note and give it everything you’ve got. If you hold back and don’t breathe fully on higher notes, you’ll end up sounding pitchy and screechy. Hit the high notes as right on as you can manage.
Remember, as with any exercise, it takes time to build muscle strength and ability. If you practice daily, you will see results of being able to sing higher notes. Don’t expect yourself to be able to sing higher notes after one or two sessions. Give yourself time and practice, practice, practice. With this mentality and consistency, you will be able to sing high notes.
