How to Deal With Damage from Natural Disasters
Natural disasters can strike any time, any where. Certain places are more prone to different types of natural disasters. For example, earthquakes are fairly common in California whereas they’re considered extremely rare on the east coast. On the other hand, the east coast is highly susceptible to powerful hurricanes while the west coast doesn’t see nearly as many.
What Kind of Damage Can Natural Disasters Cause?
Depending on the type of natural disaster that strikes, the damage can vary wildly. A powerful tornado may cause a tremendous amount of wind damage, whereas heavy flooding will cause water damage. In some cases, a natural disaster may strike without causing any real damage at all. If this happens, consider yourself lucky – because Mother Nature is an extremely powerful force capable of unbelievable amounts of damage.
How Can I Handle the Clean Up from a Natural Disaster?
Often times, the damage caused by a natural disaster can be overwhelming. It’s pretty unbelievable the amount of damage a few inches of water in your home can cause. And in the particular case of flooding, most insurance companies now require special water damage insurance; unfortunately, most basic homeowner’s insurance just won’t cover the damage caused by flooding.
If the damage is minimal, such as broken tree limbs, some garbage around the yard – then you can typically handle the clean up process yourself. But for most anything else, you’ll probably want to try and run it through your insurance and call in a professional. Don’t attempt to rebuild your roof that’s blown away and don’t attempt to fix water damage that has ruined your entire 1st floor. Unless you’re a hardcore DIY handyman, make the call and bring in a professional.
