How to Crochet a Hat

In the endless array of available crochet patterns, sometimes it can still be nearly impossible to find the perfect hat to crochet. Do you have a stitch that you absolutely love but can’t find a pattern with it? It’s actually quite simple to use that stitch and make a hat .

Using a mannequin or a model, you can just put your beginnings rounds on top of the head and crochet it directly on the head. I don’t recommend this. Your arms will not only get tired, but again, you’ll end up ripping many stitches out. Your model probably wouldn’t appreciate the hair pulling she or he will likely get either.

The most time consuming, is trial and error with your increases. Always start with doubling your stitches in round two, and from there, just grab any other hat pattern to sort of get an idea when and how to increase. This can take a lot of time a patience as you will most likely end up ripping out many rows of stitches before you get it just right.

The following technique is just an add-on to the trial and error technique. You start with your beginning ring, or chain depending on your stitch. Create your beginning ring and crochet at least four stitches for your first round. Once you’ve done that, you will need to double your first round of stitches by increasing in every stitch. Every round will be repeated once. Round four, you will increase in every other stitch; round six, it will be every third stitch. Round eight can be tricky. You’ll want to hold the hat up and evaluate whether it needs one more full row of increases. Will the hat fit on the subject’s head now? If not, you will probably need a round of increasing every fourth stitch. If the hat is wide enough, you will single stitch in at least ten stitches and increase stitch in the next stitch. Repeat until the end of the round. You will now single stitch until the hat reaches the desired length, leaving room for edging if you’d like.

Congratulations! You are now a crochet designer! Don’t forget to write your pattern down somewhere. You may want to make another someday.
