How to Cook a Ham Steak

Ham steaks are a busy cook’s best friend. They’re so quick and go well with other types of foods. Think “theme” when you cook a ham steak. In the mood for a Hawaiian style meal? A good old fashioned Irish meat and potatoes dinner? A Texas-style barbecue hot off the grill? There are so many ways to cook ham steaks. Here are a few:

Hawaiian Ham Steak Delight

  • 1/3 cup Apricot preserves
  • 1 cup crushed pineapple with juice reserved
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
  • Ham Steaks

In a small saucepan, add first 5 ingredients. Stir over low heat until bubbly. Allow to cool slightly. Brush ham steaks on both sides with mixture. Broil until a brown crust forms. That’s it. Hawaiian Ham Steak Delight can be served with curried rice, plain buttered noodles and a side of vegetables.

Old-Fashioned (But Quick) Irish Meat and Potatoes Dinner

  • 1 head cabbage, cleaned and slice into quarters
  • 4-6 carrots, cleaned and root ends removed
  • 4-6 new potatoes, clean and peeled
  • 1/8 teaspoon rye seed
  • 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1-2 bay leaves
  • 2/3 cup water
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Place one ham steak on bottom of large Dutch oven. Place half carrots and potatoes on top. Add second ham steak and place remaining carrots and potatoes on top. Add water around rim of steaks. Add spices. Cover and cook until potatoes and carrots are tender. Approximately 20 minutes. One pan meal. No messy clean-up and a great reminder of a traditional Irish meat and potatoes dinner.

Texas Hot-Off-The-Grill Ham Steaks
