How to Clean a Coffee Maker

Most coffee makers have a manual included at time of purchase that offers suggestions on how to clean a coffee maker. The most important way is: “Carefully”. Coffee makers come in multitudes of varieties. Generally, they are manufactured with the same basic configuration: a well for water, a filter basket for ground coffee, a coffee carafe or pot and electrical cord connection. Over time, the inside of the water well can become discolored as a result of water residue. This is the area where cleaning requires the most care. One cleaning method is to manually swipe the interior with a clean paper towel. The second method is to brew a pot of water that contains a ration of 1 tablespoon of baking soda to one pot of water. Then, repeat with a pot of clean water to insure that all residue has been removed. This method has the added benefit of also cleaning the pot.

Cleaning the Other Areas of A Coffee Maker

The best way to clean the pot is to fill with water and 1 tablespoon of baking soda. Allow it to soak for several hours. Rinse thoroughly. This method helps to remove acidity from the glass or metal carafe or pot. Cleaning the basket depends on the type of basket material. In most cases, they are made from a fine metal mesh or plastic. For cleaning the fine metal mesh, soaking first in water to which baking soda has been added will remove residue. Then, a soft brush can be used to reach into any tiny crevices as well as brushing the basket material. If the basket is constructed of plastic, in most cases, it can be added to the regular load in the dishwasher. This is also true of some of the baskets made from fine metal mesh. But, it’s important to check the manufacturer’s recommendations first before doing so.

Cleaning the Exterior of the Coffee Maker

Over time, a coffee maker will inevitably collect a film on the exterior surface. This is very easily cleaned with a dampened soft cloth. The hot plate or “seat” upon which the coffee pot rests can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth. Make certain that the electrical current is off before attempting this. Keeping the hot plate clean is important to avoid damage. After wiping with a damp cloth, proceed to dry it with a paper towel.
