How to Ask for a Raise
Asking your boss for a raise can be intimidating, but if you prepare properly you can sell yourself and have a good chance at getting the raise you deserve.
Prepare Yourself for the Proposal
Ask to set up a meeting with your manager to review your performance. Try to get this meeting set up for a few days from the time you ask so that you have some time to prepare yourself. During this time that you are waiting for your meeting make sure that you get yourself prepared. Write down what it is that you are going to ask for and why you feel that you deserve to be granted your requests.
Sell Yourself
It is of utmost importance for you to sell yourself to your employer. You are going to be asking your employer to pay you more money for the job that you currently do for your current wage. Make sure that you point out that you are worth the extra salary that you are needed by your company. Point out to your boss everything that you have done to go above and beyond your job description and typical duties. Mention anything noteworthy about your efforts and successes that have been beneficial for the company as a whole.
Do Your Research
Make sure that you can back up your statements. If you are going to say that you are worth more money you may find that you will have better success negotiating with your employer if you can show that the wage you are asking for is within industry standards. Find industry standard wage and job descriptions from a reliable source, such as the Occupational Outlook Handbook at www.bls.gov/oco. Bring this material to your meeting with your employer so that you can show him or her the facts in black and white.
Be Confident
If you don’t think that you’re worth the extra money that you are asking for your manager will probably agree with you. On the other hand, if you believe that you are definitely worth the money you are requesting your manager will be more likely to hear you out. Speak confidently. Stand up or sit up straight. Dress professionally the day of your meeting with your manager. All of these things will help you to exude confidence and show that you know that you are worth the raise. This will help a lot.
