How to Apply Eye Makeup
If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then eye makeup is the window dressing. If you’re tired of your “windows” being decorated with aluminum foil or a flowered bed sheet and would like to update your look to something fabulous and flattering, try some of these exciting ways to dress your eyes.
The Dramatic Eye
This look works best for evening, and strong colors can be used without looking overdone. First, apply a light shade of eyeshadow from the eyelash line up to the eyebrow. Then apply a darker shade in the crease of the eye to make the eye appear larger. Next, use a black eyeliner to line both the top and bottom lashes, but be sure to extend the line diagonally at the outer corners and blend. Apply two coats of black mascara. To frame the eyes and add more drama, use an eye pencil to color in your brows a shade darker than their natural color.
The Theatrical Eye
This look is popular with dancers, cheerleaders and others who perform on stages and under stage lighting. The key to this look is to think like a drag queen! Apply liquid eyeliner to both top and bottom lashes and blend. Gray eyeshadow is a good basic color that will work with any costume, but don’t be afraid to use bright colors either. Unless you have incredibly long, thick lashes, apply false eyelashes on your top lid, and for a very dramatic effect, you can wear bottom lashes as well. Also, go glittery – it will draw attention to your eyes and make them pop on stage. There are false eyelashes available with glitter and even rhinestones built in, so go ahead and have fun with this look!
The Sexy, Smoky Eye
Unless you’re a member of the band ABBA, or you practice the world’s oldest profession, leave the blue eyeshadow and thick eyeliner at home. The key to a sexy, smoky eye is to use subtle color and lots of blending. Use either black, brown or gray eyeliner on your upper lid just above the lash line. Use a lighter shade of liner on your bottom lashes. Apply a lighter shadow up to the brow bone and a darker shade on the lid and blend well. Finish with two coats of mascara – instant smolder. Have fun, and experiment with different looks and colors to find what works best for you!
